With the increasing cases of rapes, forceful incest etc … in India , the number of unrecognised pregnancies have increased. In other words ,with the increasing sexual assaultings against women the incidents of unwanted pregnancies have also increased which becomes a great burden on women to ‘bare and rare’ with.Recognising this need of hour, the Indian Government under the leadership of Mr.Narendra Modi has proposed to pass a new bill namely the MEDICAL TERMINATION OF PREGNANCY (amendment) BILL,2020 to amend the medical termination of pregnancy act, 1971.

PROVISIONS OF THE BILL :

The bill provides for the enhancement of the upper gestation limit for abortions from 20 weeks to 24 weeks to special categories of women-vulnerable women including survivors of rape , victims of incest etc…

AIM OF THE BILL :

The main aim or objective of this bill seems to be : expanding access of women to safe and legal abortion services on therapeutic , eugenic , humanitarian or social grounds.

BENEFITS :

This bill will work to ensure dignity , autonomy , confidentiality and justice for women who need to terminate pregnancy.
