Parallel central level schemes :

There are a few parallel schemes at central level which are like Amma Vodi aiming at the development of child girl and women which are as follows:

1.The Integrated child development scheme or Anganwadi services is one of the central schemes which like amma vodi offers an opportunity for development of  children and their mothers and encouragement of schooling at a very primary level.

The ICDS Scheme offers a package of six services, viz.

  • Supplementary Nutrition
  • Pre-school non-formal education
  • Nutrition & health education
  • Immunization
  • Health check-up and
  • Referral services

Three of the six services viz. immunization, health check-up and referral services are related to health and are provided through National Health Mission and Public Health Infrastructure. The services are offered at Anganwadi Centres through Anganwadi Workers (AWWs) and Anganwadi Helpers (AWHS) at grassroots level.

2.The Indira gandhi matriva shayog yojna is another central level scheme which is like amma vodi aims at providing economic support to the mothers specially to the pregnant women.Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY), previously Indira Gandhi Matritva Sahyog Yojana (IGMSY), is a maternity benefit program run by the government of India. It was introduced in 2016 and is implemented by the Ministry of Women and Child Development. It is a conditional cash transfer scheme for pregnant and lactating women of 19 years of age or above for the first live birth. It provides a partial wage compensation to women for wage-loss during childbirth and childcare and to provide conditions for safe delivery and good nutrition and feeding practices. In 2013, the scheme was brought under the National Food Security Act, 2013 to implement the provision of cash maternity benefit of ₹6,000 (US$84) stated in the Act. Presently, the scheme is implemented on a pilot basis in 53 selected districts and proposals are under consideration to scale it up to 200 additional ‘high burden districts’ in 2015-16. Previously the pregnant women were given 6000 but in PMMVY they receive 5000 in three installments.

3.Mid day meal scheme is one of the important central government schemes which encourages schooling of children from BPL families like Amma vodi.Mid-day meal (MDM) is a wholesome freshly-cooked lunch served to children in government and government-aided schools in India. On 28 November 2001, the Supreme Court of India passed a mandate stating, “We direct the State Governments/Union Territories to implement the Mid Day Meal Scheme by providing every child in every Government and Government assisted Primary School with a prepared midday meal.”It aims at:

  • avoid classroom hunger
  • increase school enrolment
  • increase school attendance
  • improve socialisation among castes
  • address malnutrition
  • empower women through employment

All the above schemes  like Amma Vodi  scheme are aiming at development and encouragement of child education and women employment. However , the scope of amma vodi scheme is much larger as it provides a regular income of Rs.15000 to mothers which will encourage BPL families to send their children to schools atleast to avail the benefits. Moreover, the AMMA VODI unlike any other central scheme has a wider coverage as it not only aims at providing benefits to primary school children and to their mothers but also to secondary schooling children and their mothers which will also help the children to choice their career and higher education path.It will ensure the completion of secondary level schooling to BPL children which will provide them good employment opportunity in both government and private sectors.
